I am likely replacing my 320gb slim now that the Bluray drive is going, and I am just going to get a 160 and put a new higher capacity HDD in it. I've heard that maximum you can go without modifying the PS3 physically is 500GB, is that true? And if anyone has done so would you say this HDD will work and is a good one?

    http://www.amazon.com/500GB-Drive-W...id=1340718648&sr=8-1&keywords=sata 500 gb 2.5

I thought about either just sending it in for repairs (only 150 I hear) or having it repaired locally, but with Amazon overnight delivery for 3.99 via Prime I won't have to go without for as long, and can make some of that back by selling my old PS3 (not to mention the two hard drives).

Also has anyone backed up and restored from an old HDD to a new one via the Backup Utility? Did it work alright?

    ETA:

Actually I just found a 1TB that works for sure:

    And a great YouTube tutorial:

So what have others experiences replacing HDD's in PS3's been like?

Only one I have done was from 60gb to 320gb with no problems. If you like to put films music and a lot of DLC I would go with the 1TB.

I have just freed up 100gb from deleting the game data from all the games I don't really play.

1tb should work fine, it just needs to be 9.5mm thick. A lot of 1tb drives are 12.5mm which will not fit. The Samsung 1tb you linked should do fine.

You dont really need 1tb. Even 320 is overkill. Movies and music can be streamed through your home network + there is no need for conversion then. And i have game data installed for something like 15 games on my 80gb hdd and never have any trouble. Plus i have dead nation, wipeout, journey and some demos.

I upgraded my 40gb ps3 to 500gb about 2years ago, it was really simple (on phat anyway), You just had to pull of the plastic cover and simply push in the hdd and it should push back out fully. Really simple

I'm very interested by Seagate's 750GB Hybrid Momentus XT drives
Improves load speed and frame rate with certain game engines especially engines with texture streaming(Unreal 3 and IDTech 5 at the top of my head)

Can SSD Upgrades Boost PS3 Performance?(500gb XT Momentus)

keep in mind the ps3 is only sata 1. Thats your bottle neck you will not get the full use out of a ssd, your only going to gain a marginal speed increase which isnt worth the cost.

The momentus XT is a hybrid SSD so the costs are similar to "vanilla" hard drives
available in 500gb(4GB first generation)$89 and 750GB(8GB second generation) $149

Yes I understand that the PS3 is sata one but still doesn't make the new(or older model) hybrid a redundant purchase the proof is in the pudding courtesy of a link

no i was just being funny. I still don't see it as cost effective to save a few loading seconds.

Uh, yeah, I have PS+ and ended up having to delete data on my 320GB to make room after downloading all the free games. I know the amount of space I want/need, and since 1TB will fit it's what I'm getting.
